Ambrotypie, 8 x 9,3 cm, schönes kontrastreiches Motiv, scharfes, detailreiches Bild.
Kleine Kratzer im vorderen Schutzglas. Die Wangen des jungen Mannes wurden dezent und gekonnt von Hand coloriert. Der geprägte Rahmen ist in excellentem Zustand. Der äussere Holzrahmen ist in recht gutem Zustand, ebenso wie die geprägte Rückseite mit dem schönen Ornament. Ursprünglich war dies ein Klappkästchen, dessen Deckel leider nicht mehr vorhanden ist.

Die Ambrotypie ist eine sehr frühe Technik der Photographie, die von ca. 1854 an beschränkte Verbreitung fand. Das Bild ist ein Unikat, das heißt, jede Photographie war ein Einzelstück, es konnte nicht mehr vervielfältigt werden. Es gab kein Negativ, das Bild selbst war ein Positiv. Der Bildträger war eine beschichtete Glasplatte. Nach der Belichtung in der Kamera, wurden die hellen Partien des Bildes durch den Entwicklungsprozess fixiert, die dunklen Stellen wurden abgelöst. Das heißt, dass der Glasträger an den dunklen Stellen offen und durchsichtig wurde. Um den ursprünglichen Kontrast wieder herzustellen, wurde die Glasrückwand mit schwarzer Farbe bemalt.

Obwohl schon ab ca. 1850 das Negativverfahren entwickelt wurde und die Ambrotypie und ähnliche Verfahren zurückdrängte, wurden vor allem in Amerika noch bis zum Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts Ambrotypien gefertigt.

Ambrotypie, 8 x 9,3 cm, nice and sharp picture with many details.
Some small scratches on the frontglas. The face of the man was handcoloured. The embossed frame is in excellent condition. The outer wooden frame is in good condition, the embossed leather back with the nice ornament, too. Original this was a case with a cover but the cover is gone.

The ambrotype is an early kind of photographie, used since about 1854. The picture is unique, the photographer could not make more dublicates of this. There is no negativ, only this positiv picture. The "film" was a glass plate who was sensitiv to light. In the developing prozess, the bright parts of the photo were fixed, the dark parts were gone. So the glassplate itself was transparent again in the dark parts of the photo. To bring back the contrast into the photo, the glasplates back was painted black.

Since about 1850 it was possible to make negativs and many dublicates from one negativ. Till the end of the century photograpers made Ambrotypes, especialy in the USA.
